*(Sorry for all the video game content this week, I promise this is the last time you’ll hear about video games for at least a few weeks...)*

My favourite video game podcast occasionally releases *ridiculously* long episodes.

In fact, they once released a bonus episode for their Patreon subscribers that is almost *16 hours* long. So long that they initially couldn’t even upload it to Spotify.

Now, there’s no one on the planet that would recommend, if you’re trying to grow your podcast audience, that you should make episodes this long. That would be absurd.

And yet these long episodes often end up being some of the show’s most popular.

Why?

**Because they’re indulging their core audience and, in doing so, encouraging them to *tell other people* about the show.**

You better believe that when my favourite podcast released a 16-hour episode I told all my friends who love video games about it. It’s so silly, so over the top, that I felt *compelled* to tell other people about it.

And the content was so rich and so laser-targeted at nerds like me, I was thrilled to listen to the whole thing.

At the end of this episode and other long ones, the hosts tend to give their listeners a phrase to post on social media to prove they made it all the way to the end, further encouraging social media promotion of it.

**I say this to remind you that, sometimes, it’s okay and even good to indulge your core audience instead of doing what you’re “supposed to do” to grow your following.**

Yes, much of your marketing content is going to be aimed at people who are new or newly introduced to your business or brand.

But some of your content, some of the time, can and probably should be targeted directly at your superfans or followers, the people who already know and love what you do.

**Not least because they’ll be encouraged to share it with others who may be likely to become superfans, too.**
