You may have heard the news that [Sony is ending physical video game disc production](https://blog.playstation.com/2026/07/01/physical-disc-production-ending-in-january-2028-for-new-games-releasing-on-playstation-consoles/) in January 2028.

Which means, after that date, if you buy a video game for your PlayStation, it will *only* be digital. They *might* sell you a box, but inside that box will be a code for a digital download.

Will this fundamentally hurt their business, long-term? I don’t know, things have been trending this way for a while.

**But in the short-term, people are** [***enraged***](https://www.ign.com/articles/a-triumph-of-corporate-convenience-over-consumer-choice-backlash-to-playstation-killing-discs-intensifies-as-retailer-association-slams-sony)**.**

Because physical media was a signal of commitment that the studio, the developer, the publisher believed in the game enough to print it on a disc. To package it in a box. To sell it at a brick-and-mortar retailer (and let that retailer take a 30% cut).

There are [petitions](https://www.change.org/p/don-t-kill-the-disc-tell-sony-to-keep-physical-playstation-games), games media [furor](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gDk7FA09Udg), and industry [chatter](https://www.cbc.ca/news/entertainment/sony-playstation-games-end-physical-disc-releases-9.7255967) all aligned on a single fact:

Even if *you* weren’t going to buy the physical edition, it mattered that *someone* could.

**It mattered that it was *made*.**

This isn’t business analysis or a comment on Sony’s choices or long-term strategy.

This is a reminder that people *like* having something to hold, something to read, something to put on a shelf.

**Even if your own business is mostly digital, mostly online, or mostly conducted over Zoom, there’s a benefit to making something *real*.**

This is why writing a book can help your business, even if the book doesn’t sell in huge numbers.

It’s why having physical print-outs or worksheets for your workshops enhances the experience.

Heck, it’s why having an office space can add credibility.

**Because these are all costly signals that demonstrate *commitment* to the work, and to the buyer.**

In a world of AI slop and regurgitated trends and short-term thinking, making something *real* can make you stand out.

So, think about it: What can *you* make?
