I took a few days’ vacation this month, and I noticed something about this newsletter.
I missed it.
I missed it, not because I enjoy the typing process, but because I enjoy the thinking process.
Really, I enjoy having a place to put my thoughts.
When a random marketing thought popped into my head while I was on vacation, I found myself lightly inconvenienced by the idea that I wasn’t going to be writing about it right away.
I bet you have a lot of random, disconnected, but interesting thoughts about your work or your business every day. At least most days.
But do you have a place to put them?
Because what I’ve noticed is that if you don’t write something down, you keep thinking about it. And that’s a problem because you want to have new thoughts, new ideas, new approaches that fit the current circumstances.
But if we keep having the same thoughts, over and over, because we haven’t offloaded them to text, video, audio, or some other format, we’ll never graduate to the next great thought.
That’s why content marketing can be so powerful, so useful. Not just because it shows other people how we think, but it shows us how we think.
Our marketing works on us first.
But only if we write it down, document it, and publish it somewhere other people can see it and give us feedback.
That’s the loop we’re looking for:
- First, we have a thought
- Then, we document it
- Then, we polish and improve it
- Then, we publish it
- Then, we hear about it
- Then, we improve it
- And then, we have a new, more interesting or useful thought
- And so on, forever
But it all starts with having a place to put our thoughts.
