When we follow marketing trends, we become the background against which more unique brands shine.
Our job, in marketing, is to stand out, not blend in.
But when we see an emerging marketing trend, like a certain type of AI image, or a certain style of writing, or a certain kind of design, we can feel compelled to copy it.
When we’d be better off doing its opposite.
The brands that get noticed when trends pop off are the ones who started it, and the ones who finished it (usually by parodying it).
Everyone else in the middle who merely followed the trend aren’t noticed at all.
So, when everyone else is chasing the same trend, the last thing we need to feel is FOMO.
The best thing to feel is unique.
