Are they paying people to buy? — Kelford Labs Daily

Those big, splashy, everyone’s-talking-about-it-on-LinkedIn ad campaigns can make marketers feel FOMO.

They think that the secret to growing their brand is to become as famous as possible, as fast as possible.

But, the next time you see a huge, high-profile advertising campaign from a consumer or B2B brand, ask yourself this:

  • Is this company making money?

That information is usually a Google search away (or an AI Deep Research query).

What you’ll often find is that the brand is actually spending way more on advertising than they’re actually making in sales.

And there’s virtually no difference between a company spending more than they’re making on advertising, and a company that’s paying people to buy their product.

Anyone can make a billion dollars if you’re willing to spend two billion.

And any brand can get world famous if they’re willing to spend more than they make.

The question is... is that what you want?

Or do you want a durable, resilient brand that compounds over time, instead of diminishes?

And should you be emulating a brand that’s burning cash if your intent is to keep some?
